HISTORICAL TRIANGLE – Each fall for the past nineteen years, the Williamsburg Health Foundation (WHF) has recognized an individual or organization who has helped improve the health of the greater Williamsburg community.

On Wednesday October 20, WHF announced that there were three recipients this year.

The James City County’s Emergency Management Department, the Williamsburg City Office of Emergency Management, and York County’s Office of Emergency Management share the 2021 award for their work during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The Williamsburg Health Foundation clearly believes that emergency management efforts in the City of Williamsburg, James City Counties and York Counties have saved lives and prevented disease and immense suffering by reducing COVID-19 cases through their vaccination efforts,” said WHF President and CEO, Carol L. Sale.

The award ceremony traditionally takes place every autumn as part of a festive breakfast, but this year it takes place virtually via YouTube.

WHF produced a series of videos interviewing members of the three departments about their work and its impact on their communities. What was particularly noteworthy was how all three departments were able to work together during the pandemic.

In one of the videos presented, Neil Morgan, York County Administrator, said that one of the many bright spots in the combined response to COVID-19 is the vaccination program.

“Operation Vaccinate the Peninsula involved the collaboration of the six Virginia Peninsula locations, the hospital systems and the health district,” said Morgan. “I think this will go down in the history of the COVID response, this will go down as an amazing story of people overcoming their competing pressures that every place must do what is best for the region.”
