Tyler City Council on Wednesday approved the purchase of an advanced traffic management system and associated equipment at a cost of $ 1,887,220.
The total purchase of new equipment from Paradigm Traffic totals $ 1,847,220, according to the city, with the remaining $ 44,000 being used for emergency funds.
The system includes software, traffic signal communication, traffic signal controls and vehicle detection. The system consists of a server-based system controlled by city employees and cloud-based software that can be controlled by city employees with access from any Internet connection.
The software provides the database management of the traffic light time control, the reporting and warning functions of the traffic light system and the signal power measurements according to the city.
The city plans to purchase 131 cell phones for traffic signal communication. Of these, 127 would be installed throughout the community and the remaining four would be kept for later if necessary, the city said.
All but 23 city intersections would be covered. Of these intersections, 14 will be included in road safety projects, an agreement the city has with the Texas Department of Transportation. And the expansion of the other nine downtown intersections will be postponed due to future projects that could affect the flow of traffic in the area.
The new traffic management system enables future expansion to include Tyler City vehicles and the ability for rescue workers to control traffic signals in emergencies, according to the city.
The purchase and installation of 84 new traffic light controls will replace controls that have reached their end of life, help standardize equipment, and ensure intersections can communicate with the new management system software, according to the city.
This project is financed by the city’s half-cent sales tax fund and budgeted for half-cent sales tax in the current 10-year program.
The new traffic management system and associated equipment should be installed and operational by February.
